BIDEN’S LEGACY IS GENOCIDE

WASHINGTON, DC, JULY 21, 2024— Nothing will erase the fact that Biden’s legacy is—and always will be—genocide. Over the past nine months, he has repeatedly funded, armed, and backed Israel’s mass slaughter of the Palestinian people. His actions have resulted in at least 186,000+ Palestinian people killed, which constitutes 8% of Gaza’s population.

It was not Biden’s failed debate that showed he is unfit to lead. It was the tens of thousands of bombs he sent to kill Palestinian families. It was his callous, dystopian disregard for Palestinian lives, as he ate an ice cream cone while speaking of a potential ceasefire that he took no action to make Israel agree to. It was his condemnation of thousands of student protesters on college campuses demanding an end to the genocide in Gaza.

Biden’s refusal to adhere to international law or enforce U.S. law has deepened Israel’s illegal military occupation. The International Court of Justice’s latest advisory opinion  on Friday asserted that every state has a legal obligation “not to render aid or assistance in maintaining the situation” created by Israel’s denial of Palestinian rights.

“The millions of people who have mobilized in the streets and the voting booth demanding a permanent ceasefire and an end to military funding to Israel have been clear—there is no going back to the status quo,” said USCPR Action Executive Director Ahmad Abuznaid. “The U.S. is the Israeli military’s largest funder and enabler, sending at least $17.9 billion in weapons to Israel in 2024 alone, and has thus become deeply implicated in genocide. If Biden were fit to lead, he would stop funding genocide and turn Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over to the ICC, as the Lemkin Institute has demanded.”

As Israel kills a Palestinian every four minutes and escalates regional war, justice cannot wait another day. The masses of millions of Americans protesting in the streets will certainly not wait for the next president while U.S.-made bombs paid for with our tax dollars are dropping in Gaza.

Regardless of who the Democratic presidential nominee and candidate-elect is, the next steps are clear:

  1. Every member of Congress who claims to care about human rights must reject Netanyahu’s address this Wednesday, by publicly protesting or disrupting his speech.

  2. The U.S. government must stop arming Israel. Congress must introduce and pass an immediate arms embargo to cut off all U.S. weapons and military funding to Israel, and pressure Israel into committing to a permanent ceasefire agreement to end the bloodshed.
